Scottish Borders Walking Festival 2013
Scottish Borders Walking Festival 2013

Walking Support has acted as walk leader on several occasions for the Scottish Borders Walking Festival. This has been in varying location across the Scottish Borders and we are happy to discuss guiding requirements within the Borders with any interested groups.

The above group are photographed at Abbotsford House on the banks of the River Tweed. The walk was a 9 mile circular route going through Rhymer's Glen, passing along Cauldshiels Loch and stopping at Abbotsford House before completing the walk using a section of the Borders Abbeys Way as it followed the river downstream to Melrose.

Walking Support can supply guides for both private and charity group walks. The Guide will work on his own with smaller groups or he will work in a pair or with a nominated and trained member of the group for larger events. The guide we supply will be a qualfied First Aider and will carry a comprehensive first aid kit and GPS navigational aid. We will also provide two way communications from leader to back marker as well as carrying a mobile telephone to keep in touch with our office should any emergency arise.

Dependent on the numbers and the supporting group employed for the walk (if any) the guide may have extended radio support with a support vehicle.

The guide will not only offer the direction, pace, first aid and safety for the walk, he will also provide knowledge of the route and the interest and history along the Way.

Guided Day Walks
We offer guided walks from Melrose to Mail Ros (Old Melrose) the site of a 7th century monastic community and a chapel dedicated to St Cuthbert that was the focus of Pilgrimage in the middle ages.
This walk is just over 7 miles in length and takes in the Roman Fort of Trimontium, the Monks Trail to the River Tweed and the Rhymers Stone on the side of the Eildon Hills. Starting and finishing at the beautiful ruined Melrose Abbey walkers will have the time to visit this site which was established in the 12th century.

Guided Long Distance Walks
Although we have been promoting such a service on most of the long distance walking routes that we support, we have found that the demand was so limited that we were unable to offer this service at a realistic price.
We are therefore reluctantly having to restrict this type of guided walk to only established groups that number at minimum 16 walkers.
Please contact us if you have such a walking group requirement and we can discuss what we can offer and provide you with a package price.

Guided Cycles
Walking Support can also provide supervised cycles or walks on the Forth/Clyde and Union Canals or any part of them. This would generally include a section past the Falkirk Millennium Wheel, the worlds largest canal lift. We will do this for any group of individuals or for a charity, first planning an event against the clients requirements and capabilities then guiding the event to ensure success and safety.
